79 KG
Lots of movement at 79 KG to best start the stage, it’s best to begin with the premier upset of July which was Dean Hamiti Jr. upsetting Senior Russian Nationals runner-up #4 Mokhamad Nasirkhaev (RUS) by comeback pin at PWL-9. This sets up Hamiti Jr. for a spot in the top ten but also justified then the entry of Evan Wick (head to head win over Hamiti) and Levi Haines (wins over Evan Wick at Final X to make U.S. world team) into the top ten and any results against them would then factor into the placement of other, non-americans into the top ten. Having said all that, with Hamiti Jr. being a top ten commodity, let’s look at how that affects the rest of the top ten.
From the results of the Budapest Ranking Series Tournament, 2023 Senior World bronze medalist #20 Vladimeri Gamkrelidze (GEO) skyrockets up seventeen points to #3 in the rankings for winning over #15 Magomet Evloev (TJK) with bronze medalists being Georgios Kougioumtsidis (GRE) and Fariborz Babei (IRI). The reason for Gamkrelidze’s shot up in the rankings is due to him beating #15 Magomet Evloev (TJK) who beat Georgios Kougioumtsidis (GRE) in the semis after Kougioumtsidis (GRE) had upset #6 Levi Haines (remember Haines win over #7 Evan Wick with both men’s spots being justified due to the performance of Hamiti Jr. over former #4 Mokhamad Nasirkhaev at PWL-9). From the aftermath of the Budapest Ranking Series Tournament, Gamkrelidze takes the #3 spot from #20, Evloev moves up nine spots to #4 and Kougioumtsidis debuts in the rankings at #5.
Finally, tracking back to Dean Hamiti Jr., he debuts in the rankings at #10 for his performances at PWL-9 (win over #4 (now #11) Mokhamad Nasirkhaev) and at the Ziolkowski Open (bronze medal after loss to 2023 79 KG Senior World bronze medalist #9 Vasil Mykhailov). Vasyl Mykhailov (UKR) is back in the rankings at #9 for beating #10 Dean Hamiti Jr. to make the finals of the Ziolkowski Open where he lost in the finals to Simon Ruiz (USA), with Ruiz taking the #8 spot for beating #9 Mykhailov.
